Morningstar
was created in 1971, from a combined love of travel
and folk art. In the 70’s we imported from
Ethiopia, Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan, Mexico, Guatamala
and Peru: wherever our adventures took us. However,
it was India that captivated us the most. The
sheer diversity of cultures and the brilliance
of its craftspeople kept drawing us back to India,
until it became our home away from home.
At first we carried only clothing and giftware.
Our flagship store on Baldwin Street in Kensington
market was the product of its times. The spirit
of the sixties and seventies was reflected in
the simple, durable, environmentally conscious
clothing we carried. Our move to Yonge street
was a sign of the greater Toronto community’s
interest in different cultures and the extent
to which diversity was becoming central in a permanent
way. We have been fortunate in how much of our
early community still lingers around us. Many
of our customers from the seventies have brought
their children to our store, and have made them
our customers in turn. We also serve a large Indian
expatriate clientele who recognize a genuine love
of India reflected in our loyalty to our craftspeople.
At Morningstar, we hope to continue to bring you
the kind of variety of designs and quality of
craftsmanship that keeps us fascinated with India.
Our approach is not massive quantities of any
one thing, but a constantly changing richness
and variety that we hope will keep you intrigued
as well. We try to remain true to our community
spirit, so you will find an extremely non-corporate
attitude in all your interactions with us.
This is what keeps Morningstar unique and original.
It is not just a business, it is a lifestyle.
This lifestyle has made our friends our customers,
and our customers our friends.
